Ms Yeo Sze Ling
Research Scientist, Infocomm Security Department,Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR
Dr Yeo Sze Ling is a research scientist in the Infocomm Security department at A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I 2 R), where she has worked since 2005.
Sze Ling lost her sight when she contracted glaucoma at the tender age of four. As she grew up, in spite of the many odds stacked against her, she was determined not to let her visual impairment stop her from living life to the fullest.
She attended mainstream schools in secondary school and beyond, embracing hard work with unwavering commitment. Her determination earned her the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship, and she was bestowed the National Science and Technology Award for being the top student to graduate from the Faculty of Science at the National University of Singapore in 2001. Completely blind, she surmounted doubts and challenges to earn herself three degrees, including a PhD in Mathematics.
She volunteers at the Society for the Physically Disabled, sharing both her talents and experiences to inspire and help other visually disabled youths to gain renewed hope and purpose. She has helped several visually handicapped students with their Mathematics and a couple of young visually handicapped adults to get started with assistive technology.
Her unstinting efforts have made a significant difference in other young lives, such as the visually impaired student whom she taught to use Chinese Braille. With Sze Ling’s mentoring
and encouragement, the student became the first blind student to pass the Chinese ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level examinations successfully.
