Global Social Innovators Forum 2010
3-5 December 2010
LASALLE College of The Arts
GSIF 2010 : Future Readiness : What's In It For Me?
SIP never stands still. Despite its huge success in 2009, we will courageously up the ante again. For 2010, participants can anticipate extremely thought provoking ideas and processes, as well as visual treats. The theme for GSIF 2010 is "Future Readiness : What's In it For Me ?" It will discover the drivers of trends and what future readiness mean to business, government, NPOs and the individual, as well as what each person/organisation needs to do in determining their own future. Big questions asked are 'what does the future look like?', 'what do we make of the big trend drivers like demography, technology, information, globalisation, connectivity, etc?', or 'what is the new social contract between the private, public and people sector?' and 'how can we co-create our future?".
Apart from plenary sessions and our signature Firepitch Spotlight, Social Innovation Lab and Masterclass tracks, GSIF2010 will introduce 2 new extremely exciting tracks. An aspirational goal of developing a 'Future Readiness Matrix/Index' will be launched where GSIF changemakers and decision makers from the private/public/people sector will partake in co-creating their future. The 'Social Innovators Accelerator' will look at establishing a support network, incubating and fast tracking 8-10 ideas or existing businesses to the next level of growth.
To ensure a lively and mind jogging forum that is unlike others, we will be bringing in top level speakers from diverse fields, including private sector honchos, social entrepreneurs, award-winning innovators, media, and government officials.
- PROGRAMME OUTLINE - | Parallel Tracks | The Big Idea! | Master Classes | The Accelerator* | Future Readiness | Fire Pitch Spotlight! |
| Day 1 | | 8:30am - 8:55am (25min) | Registration and Breakfast | | 9:00am - 9:20am (20min) | Opening Address & Welcome Remarks Penny Low, President and Founder, Social Innovation Park Ltd | | 9.30am to 11am (1 hr 30min) | Opening Plenary 1 Future Readiness - What's In It For Me? When
the winds of change sweeps, when a trade route changes course, a
civilisation disappears while another emerges. Mega trends are forces
that shapes government, buisness & individuals, impacting all
aspects of our lives. Mega trends reflect our probable future but it is
our interaction with these trends, what we do or do nothing, that
becomes our reality. 1. What are some mega treands and future drivers ? 2. If
globalisation, demography, technology, urbanisation and such are major
forces to reckon with, how do we ride the tide of change and not be
swept away by future shocks? 3. At GSIF2009, futurist Alvin and Heidi Toffler asked an intriguing question: 'How do we even begin thinking about our future?' What really matters in this human race ? Chair: Penny Low, President and Founder, Social Innovation Park Ltd Panelists: 1. Patrick Dixon, Futurist, Author & World’s Top 20 business guru alive, UK 2. Fadi Ghandour, Founder & CEO, Aramex International, Jordan 3. Michelle Guthrie, Chair, Plan International Hong Kong, Hong Kong 4. Richard Kelly, Assoc Partner & MD of IDEO Asia Pacific, UK/ China 5. Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Singapore | | 11:00am - 12:30pm (1hr 30min) | Plenary 2 Co-creating Our Future: A Sensible World? The last centuries and humanity 1.0 appears to have centred around improving standards of living, material ownerships
and moving from developing to developed countries. Much of human
progress is measured in terms of material well being and financial
bottomlines, regardless of externalities. Yet economic progress as in
the case of China did uplift millions out of poverty and into urbanity –
sometimes gaining wealth but losing ties. Moving
forward, in a world where the future is fast and furious and where
history is accelerated, the race to the top can become chaotic and an
end in itself. This can have dire consequences on our lifestyle,
culture, and society. Without a common vision of where the race may
take us to, and what anchors humanity, anomie can set in to tear
community apart and create unprecedented tension in society adn across
all borders. 1. 'The best way to predict the future is to create it', said Peter Drucker, the business guru. How do we co-create a sensible future? If given a
chance to co-create our future and design the world that your children
live in, what ingredients and values would you emphasise on? In all of our trend-spotting and the hustle and bustle of wealth creation, have we paused to think about our desired common future? 2. In the face of these future drivers, how is the role and modus operandi of NGOs and NPOs changing? Is there more or less to do? What type of leadership would we need to build a more inclusive, sustainable and better humanity 2.0? 3. We
all need frameworks and reference points to function properly. What
gets measured gets done. What KPIs would you put into the making of
this future readiness index? Would an index that combines the GDP +
Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness Index + UN Human Development Index +
FTSE 30 make any sense? 4. How
can GSIF2010 be the collaborative platform on which the private,
public and people sector changemakers will come together to co-create
our common future? Chair: Penny Burtt, Senior Diplomat, Australia Panelists: 1. Walt Mayo, Senior Vice President International, Endeavor Global, USA 2. Narayan Ramachandran, Co-Chairman, Unitus Capital, India 3. Teo Ho Pin, Mayor, North West District, Singapore 4. Amit Wanchoo, MD, Eaton Laboratories, Kashmir 5. Enhancing Leadership Skills: Developing Your Creativity And Authenticity Through Art Therapy This
workshop will be aimed at enhancing leadership skills through
developing a balance between your personal and professional lives and
your true self and false self. According to Goffe & Jones (2005) in
The Harvard Business Review in Managing Authenticity: The Paradox of
Great Leadership: “Leaders and followers both associate authenticity
with sincerity, honesty, and integrity. It’s the real thing – the
attribute that uniquely defines great leaders.” (P. 87) By
learning to bring more authenticity through creativity into your work
environment and personal relationships one can develop integrity,

in. With this ability leaders can have a positive impact locally and
globally on community and work issues in contemporary life. Conversation Catalyst Elizabeth Coss, Programme Leader, MA Art Therapy, LASALLE College of the Arts, USA | | 1:30pm - 3:30pm (2hr) | The Big Idea! 1.2 Incredible India – Evolution & Revolution! 1. India's
Demographic Dividend - According to the International Labor
Organization, by 2050, the percentage of people above the age of 65
will be 39% in the U.S., 53% in Germany and 67% in Japan. India, by
contrast will have only 19% above age 60. How can India handle this
demographic dividend challenge and channel it towards economic growth? 2. Integration
of rural and urban India - How can rural and urban India be
effectively integrated? What are the linkages? How can public policy
strengthen these links? 3. When
all large nations have progressed from agriculture to manufacturing to
services to Information Technology, can India skip manufacturing and
services and directly become an IT superpower, when 60% of its
population is still agrarian? Conversation Catalysts: 1. Sriram Raghavan, Founder & CEO, Include Labs, USA/India 2. Narayan Ramachandran, Co-Chairman, Unitus Capital, USA/India | | 1:30pm - 3:30pm (2hr) | MasterClass 1 The Fishy Part of Scaling Up Without

Collaborative Innovation: Can Knowledge Rework the World?
Imagine, if all knowledge in the world is
seamlessly shared, if there is an international database that could identify
best practices, model organizations, programmes and development projects that are game-changing, what new opportunities and
risks would be uncovered? The open source movement that has moved from
cyberspace to the real world, Apache software, alibaba, Wikipedia, Facebook
and Twitter are conduits of information built via collaborative innovations, creating
game changing killer apps that achieve phenomenal growth and reach.

government, NPOs and individuals learn from open source leadership, which has moved from
cyber space collaborations to real world partnerships?
2. How can we leverage on the mindset and
methodologies of the open source
movement to quantum leap growth?
3.
There are billions of
people in poverty and this could be translated into a huge market potential if
and when investments are channeled into the areas. How can we collaborate to

Branding
for change - How Coca Cola & Apple Conquers The World?
Brands have the power to
change the World. Think Coca-Cola. Think Apple. Think Nike… Brands craft and
shape our behavior, for better or for worse, and when rooted in a deep,
clearly articulated, higher order purpose, they can accelerate movements for
positive societal change in amazingly powerful ways… At a time when more than
ever, we know the challenges we are facing as a human race, Brands with
Purpose are one of the most powerful forces for change. Large
Multinational or Social Innovation Start-up Brands alike: what is your
Purpose? What is your Movement? And … are you Serious about it?

Be Yourself! Enhancing
Leadership Skills: Developing
Your Creativity and Authenticity Through Art Therapy
This workshop will
be aimed at enhancing leadership skills through developing a balance between
your personal and professional lives and your true self and false self.
According to Goffe & Jones (2005) in The Harvard Business Review in
Managing Authenticity: The Paradox of Great Leadership: “Leaders and
followers both associate authenticity with sincerity, honesty, and integrity.
It’s the real thing – the attribute that uniquely defines great leaders.” (P.

By learning to

can have a positive impact locally and globally on community and work issues

MasterClass 4.1
How to Make a Culture Creative
Not all cities,
not all countries, and not all cultures are equally alive. When we see
one that’s exciting and charging into a wonderful future, what makes it so
alive is the happiness of the people, their competence, and their ability to
create. And let’s not forget that creativity is big business. Think of all
the money made by “Avatar” or “Toy Story 3.” And a beautiful, bustling city
attracts high-powered talent and capital. Obviously, a certain
amount of stability
is necessary to promote a feeling of security, and it’s a requirement for
long-range planning. However, if the people of a culture can’t create, they
lack vitality, and they can only consume things dreamed up and produced by
others. Their culture lags. If a company can’t innovate, it soon finds itself
falling far behind competitors who can. For example, Microsoft and Nokia are
goliaths -
but Apple keeps out-innovating them, and as a result it reaps fortunes while
also attracting one of the most loyal brand followings in modern history.
There is a common but utterly erroneous notion that creative people are
special or different. Not true. EVERYONE can be taught to be much more creative / innovative. To make a culture creative, make its
individuals creative. Exactly how this is done is the focus of this master
class.

Suntzu's Art
Of War
In The
21st Century
We are potentially
entering a multi-polar world in this new decade; a similar order that gave
birth to Sun Tzu Art of War 2,500 years ago. As we shift from a stable and
predictable age to potentially chaotic decade, strategic leadership from the
top management would be critical for businesses to survive in such an
environment. In this session, Dr Zhang Yen Ming will share on strategic
leadership principles from the Art of War, the key ideas leaders can take

Plenary 5
Imagine the world
in 2030!
A group of 200 children were
asked to paint a picture of the future they dream - the result were pictures
of green, peace, caring, and a humane world. Few drew picture of wealth. Yet,
in the course of growing up, puritan values give way to narrow weath
creation, resulting in the perpetual challenge of balancing profit maximisation with sustainable growth in a world where the framework and basis of knowledge and competition
are changing fast and furious. Traditional mindsets are constantly challenged
as inventions and killer apps emerge faster than we can respond.
1.
How do we cope with such a rapidly changing world and learn to ride the tides?
2.
What attributes should an individual or organisation have to leapfrog growth?
3.
How can we co-create the future we want to live in?
