Plenary 1 : Designing Our Future!

We are living on borrowed resources. In 1960, humans consumed 49% of the biosphere's renewable resources. Today, we consume over 125% of the earth's annual renewable resources, depleting its capital stock. Meanwhile, global trade gathers pace, but so has income inequity. Geometric population growth, rapid urbanization, pollution and overconsumption, the extinction of species, melting of glaciers and desertification are boomerangs on our human short-term dominance and upsets of the planet’s biosphere and social balance. Human behaviour, current business models and economic development do not account for externalities, which present and future generations have to pay. We may have to pay  the ultimate price when externalities turn into human and nature’s unrest.

Designing the future requires paradigm shifts. Knowledge, technology, incentives and critical leadership in every sector will determine the way we work, live and play. All challenges and solutions are part of a larger ecosystem, and there is only one homeour Earth. Collaborative innovation will multiply the economic, social, and environmental progress and profit of the future. Opportunities abound in adversity. How do we do good and do well in building a more inclusive, sustainable and better future?

  1. What are some possible best- and worst-case scenarios in 2030?
  2. How do we get to the best-case scenarios and what would the new growth architect look like?
  3. What will incentivize leaders from the public, private and people sectors to catalyze cross-sector collaboration and the process of integrating sustainability and integrity into the design of the economic structures and systems of tomorrow?
  4. How do we mobilize the masses to become net contributors to this new architecture? What is the role of social entrepreneurs and innovators in this new world?

Plenary 2 : Team Earth : The Marvels of Cross-Sector Collaboration

Ensuring sustainability of the earth's essential resources while maintaining economic growth is the defining challenge of the 21st century. To meet this challenge we must act faster, on a grander scale, and collaborate more closely than ever before.

Team Earth is an unprecedented global cross-sector collaboration that will galvanize the scaled impact of many leading companies, powerful brands, NGOs, teachers, students and others who come together to take "collective action" against the most pressing issues facing people and our planet.

Guided by the wisdom of a blue-ribbon panel of the world's leading scientists, Team Earth harnesses the power of social media and global outreach to incite action and drive meaningful impact against these challenges. Our intent is to inspire a movement—one that creates relevant, sustainable solutions, encourages innovation, drives responsible consumption, and transforms the way societies manage the earth's natural resources so that everyone, everywhere, can live a healthier, more prosperous life.  This panel features a high-level discussion with members of Team Earth and global influentials on how cross-sector collaboration is uniquely suited to address today's challenges and how it intends to create scalable solutions that combine sustainable economic growth with global conservation.

Plenary 3 : The Big Shifts : Social Innovation & an Inclusive World

Changing demographics, flattening of the world, changing climate, shifting powers from Atlantic to Asia and from establishments to mass individuals, these are all tectonic shifts that present not only unprecedented challenges, but also a wealth of opportunities. In fact, the green movement and bio-medical revolution may produce more billionaires than the ICT Revolution while creating new industries and reaping social and environmental rewards. The bottom of the pyramid is the new exponential growth market for those with the right mindset and toolset. Technology, supply and demand chains and management process innovations are fulcrums of growth. The future is exciting yet challenging for individuals, corporates and governments all at once.

  1. What are the top three exciting big shifts?
  2. What are the innovations that can create or have created quantum leap growth?
  3. How are socially responsible companies and social enterprise leveraging on these shifts and innovations to grow?

Social Innovation Lab 2 : Media for Social Good

Bad news sells! From the meltdown on Wall Street to the demise of Princess Diana, to reporting and reinforcing social ills, the media have been in the spotlight for unethical or irresponsible reporting, leading to a loss of confidence in the mainstream media. The social media, fueled by numerous netizens, feature real-time reporting with sound, pictures and blogs and fill the cyberspace with wisdom of the crowd, or the lack of it. If the pen is mightier than the sword, then picture and sound can speak a thousand words.

  1. How can social entrepreneurs/innovators and the media build mutual trust and levearge on each other for greater social good?
  2. What are some powerful examples of such collaborations?
  3. How can the media be encouraged to become active agents of change in philanthropy, social innovation and social responsibility?

Social Innovation Lab 3 : SIP-LKYSPP, NUS: Impact Investment - From New Money to New Societies

From strategic social investments to social bonds, well over three trillion dollars have been invested in socially responsible investments worldwide. However, the lack of market efficiencies in the social sector, coupled with the lack of proven and widely adopted social impact measurement tools, have not effectively multiplied the dollars and sense of social investment. Yet, more money will pour into social impact investments, as giant corporations realise that they have to frame their business around solutions to social banes—be it feeding nine billion people in 2020 or warding off climate change disasters.  Impact investments are potentially new monies that are gamechangers catalysing new societies.

  1. What are 'social impact factors' and how can they be better measured?
  2. How are positive social impact investments rewarded with greater access to financing for quantum-leap growth?
  3. Will social stock exchange be the game changers?

Facilitator: Durreen Shahnaz, Founder and Chairman, Impact Investment Exchange Asia and Head, Program on Social Innovation and Change and Adjunct Associate Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore

  1. How can collaboration bridge the tri-sectoral divide and build trust among them?
