Innovation: Shaping the Future Plenary: Overcoming Global Challenges: Opportunities Amidst Crisis
The clear and present dangers of a global financial system and economic crisis have grabbed daily headlines; focusing the iris of everyone -government, businesses and people, on short-term issues and pay-offs. Alan Greenspan recently acknowledged that his firm belief in the free market that shuns regulation is flawed. Amidst this crisis, luxury class investment banking appears to have lost its luster while bottom of the pyramid consumer-based banks rooted in its people seems to be the darling that powers ahead. Does that imply that Milton Friedman’s assumption that the sole social responsibility of business is to increase profits is challenged? Bail outs are in fact reversing the equation, resulting in what is known as privatizing profits and socializing losses. The Lehman Brothers Minibonds fiasco has also caused governments around the world to re-examine their regulatory framework. Undeniably, businesses and society have proven to be mutually dependent and there needs to be a new social contract. Clearly, local and global leaders are chipping away at old paradigms and dark clouds for silver linings and new game rules. This session provides insight on global trends and issues impacting businesses, government and society. 1. What are some of the fundamental shifts in businesses trends? What shapes the outcomes of the current challenges? 2. What are the emerging trends that will shape our lives in the future? 3. How do we seize emerging opportunities amidst the crisis? 4. While keeping our eyes on clear and present dangers, how do we keep our minds focused on emerging trends and longer term survival, and take advantage of changing times to emerge a better corporation, a better government and a better society, when the storm is over? | 1045 | Parallel Workshops |
